Weight Management Guide with GLP-1 Medications (For Current Patients Only)
- Tell all healthcare professionals that you are receiving weight loss injections, including your dentist and pharmacist.
- Eat a well-balanced diet containing all macronutrients (i.e. carbohydrates, fats and proteins). This will allow the medicine to work. Avoid going long periods without eating, as this can cause dizziness. Your weight loss injections should be used with a reduced-calorie eating plan and increased physical activity.
- Speak to your doctor if you plan to drink alcohol to discuss any possible contraindications.
- If you are experiencing persistent or worsening side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, contact your doctor for advice. It is important that you stay hydrated to avoid complications such as dehydration, low blood pressure and/or new or worsening kidney problems.
- Start probiotics e multivitamins daily.
- Eat proteins every 3 hours (goal is 80g-100g daily) to help keep muscle mass during weight loss.
- Consider protein shakes like Fairlife, Premier or plant based Ka’Chava and protein bars such as Barebells, RXBAR or plant based Orgain.
- Drink at least 64 oz of water daily. Consider electrolytes such as Key Nutrients, LMNT ou Liquid IV, particularly if you are exercising and sweating.
- Avoid energy drinks.
- Calculate how many calories per day you need here. Don’t go below 1,000 calories.
- It’s important that you download the MyFitnessPal app, or a similar calorie tracking app, on your smartphone to help you stay within your calorie goal.
- If you are planning to get pregnant, talk to your doctor. You may need to stop taking this medicine at least 2 months before you become pregnant.
Managing nausea
- eat light, low-fat foods: crackers, toast, rice, bananas, applesauce
- eat foods that contain water: soups and gelatins.
